Overview

Even an icon has to evolve. In the late 1960s, as the world of design shifted towards bolder lines and more integrated forms, Omega expertly guided its legendary Seamaster collection into a new, modern era. This Reference 166.037 is a perfect snapshot of that brilliant transition, combining the Seamaster’s robust heritage with a fresh and undeniably cool aesthetic.

This era saw watch cases begin to move away from the delicate, sweeping lugs of the 50s towards more substantial and integrated shapes. The “C-Case” or tonneau shape of this Seamaster was at the forefront of this trend, creating a seamless flow from the watch head to the bracelet that would come to define the 1970s. But this was more than just a cosmetic update. Inside beats the fantastic Omega Calibre 565 automatic movement. This legendary workhorse is renowned for its durability and features a convenient quickset date function (activated by repeatedly pulling the crown), making it an eminently practical watch for everyday wear.

This particular example is, in our opinion, an absolute stunner. The 35mm stainless steel C-Case is in beautiful condition, retaining its original and distinct brushed and polished surfaces. Its impeccably clean, silver sunburst dial is a study in crisp, architectural design. The applied baton indices feature sharp, black inlays, which are mirrored in the handset, providing excellent contrast and legibility. What truly completes the package is the original Omega “brick-link” steel bracelet, an integral part of the watch’s intended design that gives it a handsome, cohesive look on the wrist.

We would describe the condition of this watch as a time capsule. It has been incredibly well-preserved. The case lines are sharp, the dial is virtually flawless, and the iconic Seamaster Hippocampus on the caseback is crisp and well-defined. This is an honest, unmolested example that showcases the quality and timelessness of late-60s Omega design.
